From 27 April to 28 July, visit the exhibition “In the Name of Desire” in the main building of the Latvian National Museum of Art, which reveals the diversity of themes of sexuality and sensuality in the history of Baltic visual art and today. A documentary is about New York everyday life of Afro-American, Latin American and trans LGBT communities in the 1980s, as well about traditions of “ballroom” scene and performances based on fashion and pop culture. In this film, through a creative expression a community and families are made, that fight for their rights to exist and prove themselves to the world in which the main actor is a heteronormative, white-skinned and seemingly monolithic society.
Partners Garate and Omar are embraced by countless interesting characters from the streets of Madrid: from newborn babies to Garate’s 60-year-old father, who is finding love again; two policemen reciting things which are important to them in the hope that their lists match; a couple who is either kissing or fighting with equal fervour; and many, many others.

Together with historian Ineta Lipša we will focus on what has happened in the field of LGBTQ history research up until now, what is happening and what is planned for the future (in other words – known and unknown). The idea is both to remind of what has already been done, to announce the latest research, and possibly to outline the necessary research directions for the future and also to invite people who could testify about the time of Soviet occupation.

In summer 2005, two boys decide to organize an event which has never been held in Riga before: a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender celebratory parade through the city’s streets. Based on similar events in the West, they called this event Pride. They had no idea that this well-intentioned idea will cause an almost unbelievable avalanche of events over several years.

Join us for a community afternoon together with our guests from Ukraine. First we’ll enjoy a Short Film Screening and a discussion, followed by a Postcard Workshop.
The panel will feature Latvian and Lithuanian curators who have created these and other exhibitions that have had a strong or specifically chosen orientation towards queer art We will talk about the development of such large projects and the work that goes in their planning, the feedback from the public and visions for the future and the role of queer artists and their archives in the creation of this future.
In the family of teacher Nadia, the pressure is driven up by an inactive husband, a son that’s constantly looking for his place, a daughter with a dream of acting classes and a mortgage loan. A solution to the arisen problems has been offered by some “European grant” which offers a nice sum of money for attending “tolerance classes” with a guest lector who would live at their house; the only problem – Vasil, the “tolerance teacher”, is openly gay and with his own idea of “normality”.

Join a self-defense workshop where we will discuss and try out possible action plans and techniques which could help and empower us to move, even though our brains would normally refuse to cooperate. Workshop will be led by Ieva Ruzgyte, Apsigink creator and self-defense instructor for women and the LGBTQ community from Lithuania, who will be taking you on this exciting self-defense journey. What should you bring with you? Comfy clothes, a good mood and water.
This film is based on the motives of a novel by the paradigmatic English writer Virginia Woolf (1882—1941), which was first published in 1928. The novel was inspired by Woolf’s close and potentially favourite friend, poet and novelist from aristocratic origin Vita Sackville-West’s wild family history. The release of “Orlando” was scandalous, and it’s still one of Woolf’s most popular novels which has been screened twice; the first film was released in 1992.

In the exhibition “Queer Museum” you’ll be able to see how our artists imagine a Queer Museum in the future, that will depict the reality of being part of the LGBTQ community.
On the first day of the Baltic Pride 2024 program, we will open the home of the pride team, volunteers, supporters, guests and visitors for the entire duration of the pride – the Pride House at Kaņepes Kultūras centrs.
Join us for a teach-in and community discussion on intersex in the Baltic States where intersex activists will explain the basics of intersex biology, the history of the modern medical model of (mis) treatment, and major social issues and inequities facing the community.

Continuing to kick off Baltic Pride with a drag show full of kings, queens and other creatures! Join the Pride House discussion about “LGBTQ in the family” where you will find answers to questions – what it is like to be a parent whose child has come out, where to find help, what to do if you want to come out to your family and many other issues related to topic of LGBTQ in the family.
