Homophobia in sports: inability to come out, condemnation, prejudice, the conflict between the fear of ruining one’s career and the desire to be true to one’s self and others.
We often hear how athletes come out of the closet only after they’ve retired. Only then do they feel free enough to live authentically and are able to tell us what they’ve been through – how their coaches blackmailed them into staying hidden by threatening to drop their contracts; how they faced casual conversational homophobia every day from other athletes; how they managed to survive and fit into the heteronormative world of sports as closeted LGB people.
These and other most common problems faced by queer athletes and what we can do to improve the current situation will be discussed by Christoffer Smitz, Linus Berg and Ieva Ruzgyte.
